Blackrock 3 – 16 V Kanturk 0 – 17 @ Fermoy.

Report:  Roger Ryan

Our ability to score goals (we scored 3 again) stood us in good stead as we overcame the strong challenge of Kanturk at Fermoy on Saturday evening in the quarter-final of the Premier Senior Hurling Championship. The final score of Rockies 3 – 16, Kanturk 0 – 17 put us winners by 8 points.

Following some impressive displays in their group, Kanturk came to this game with a high profile and would have been favourites with a lot of people to win this one. And at times, particularly in the first half, we struggled to stay with them, but we hung in there and finished the half on level pegging at Rockies 1 – 08, Kanturk 0 – 11. Our full back line trio of Ollie Mc Adoo, and Mark O'Keeffe and a man of the match performance by John Cashman kept the dangerous Kanturk forwards at bay and prevented them from scoring a goal for the entire game, ably assisted by Gavin Connolly in goal who also helped himself to 2 valuable points when he converted some long range frees. Our half back-line continues to grow in stature, and put in a great shift while Daniel Meaney worked tirelessly in the middle of the field and contributed 2 points.

The second had barely started when Fionn Coleman grabbed a high ball, swivelled around his marker and planted the sliothar in the back of the net for our second goal, and a lead of 3 points. Kevin O'Keeffe and Ryan Sweeney increased that lead to 5 points when they followed up with 1 point each. Kanturk with 2 points pegged it back to 3 again and when Alan Connolly pushed it to 4 points, Kanturk countered with 2 points to reduce our lead to 2 points, 2 – 11 to 0 – 15. Daniel Meaney traded point's with Kanturk, Alan Connolly converted a free and Tadhg Deasy crashed home our third goal to put us 6 points ahead with 50 minutes on the clock. The scoreboard now read Rockies 3 – 13, Kanturk 0 – 16 and it got better when Robbie Cotter scored a peach of a point to push us 7 in front. A late point from Kanturk was answered by a point from Alan Connolly and a long-range free from Gavin to leave the final score at Rockies 3 – 16, Kanturk 0 – 17.
