Our Senior Hurlers got their championship campaign off to a great start with a 5 points victory over a dogged Kanturk at Mallow on Saturday evening. The final score was Rockies 1 – 20, Kanturk 0 – 18. At the end of a very competitive first half, the score was Rockies 0 – 13, Kanturk 0 – 09 but our boys upped the tempo considerably in the second half and at one point we were leading by 7 points 1 – 16 to 0 – 12.

Alan Connolly got us off and running with an opening before Kanturk replied with 2 points to go ahead for the one and only time in the game. Tadhg Deasy soon had us back on level terms and with a second point gave us a lead which we were never to relinquish. Niall Cashman, Michael O'Halloran and Ryan Sweeney added a point each to push us ahead by 4, 0 – 06 to 0 – 02. A Kanturk point was then answered by a point from Robbie Cotter. Kanturk with 3 points on the trot reduced our lead to the minimum. Alan Connolly traded points and Ryan Sweeney and Alan Connolly added a point each to put us ahead by 3 points again 0 – 10 to 0 – 07. David O'Farrell traded a point with Kanturk, Kanturk affef a further point point and Alan Connolly closed out the first with a point to leave the score at 0 – 12 to 0 – 09.

An opening point by Ryan Sweeney was followed by a point from Kanturk and when Kevin O'Keeffe's point was answered by Kanturk Michael O'Halloran crashed the ball to the net for a great goal to give us some breathing space and a lead of 6 points 1 – 14 to 0 – 11. A point by Kanturk was quickly followed by a similar score by Kevin O'Keeffe and this was added to by a mighty long-range free by Gavin Connolly to push us ahead by 7, 1 – 16 to 0 – 12. Two pointed frees by Kanturk reduced our lead to 5. Michael O'Halloran's point was followed by a point from Kanturk and Daniel Meaney sent over a fine point to put us ahead by 6 again, 1 – 18 to 0 – 15. Alan Connolly and Robbie Cotter added the final 2 points and Kanturk finished with 3 points to bring the final score to 1 – 20 to 0 – 18.
