Blackrock 3 – 25 V 1 – 12 Brian Dillons @ Ballinlough.
Report: Roger Ryan
Our Junior Hurlers repeated the recent feats of our Seniors when they too scored 3 goals in their quarter-final Championship game versus Brian Dillons at Ballinlough on Saturday last. An outstanding display of top-class hurling ensured them a spot in the semi-final of the J.H.C.(A) following a comprehensive win over Brian Dillons. The final score of Rockies 3 – 25 to 1 – 12 for Brian Dillons was a true reflection of the state of play. Luke Fogarty was our top scorer with 10 points and was unerring in his free-taking and from play. Jack O'Farrell was a constant thorn in the side of Bride Dillons rearguard and finished the game with a major contribution of 2 – 02. James Allen scored our third goal and also grabbed 2 points. The remainder of the scores were shared by Dean Mc Carthy, David Garvan, Peter Leneghan, Andrew Murphy, Emmett Sheehan and Dan Tyner --- a total of 9 scorers in all.
James Allen not only scored the opening point, he also closed out the first half with the final point and helped himself to a goal in the second half. A point by Luke Fogarty and Dean Mc Carthy followed by a goal by Jack O'Farrell had us leading by 1 – 03 before Dillons registered their first point and this was quickly followed by 1 point each by Peter Leneghan and Jack O'Farrell. The score now stood at 1 – 05 to 0 – 01 when we lost the services of Paddy Lynch who had to retire with a hand injury. Paddy has been a stalwart of this team and we wish him a speedy recovery in time for the semi - final. Brian Dillons with 3 points on the trot reduced our lead to 4 points but our boys responded with 4 points also, 2 from Luke Fogarty and 1 each from Dave Garvey and Dean Mc Carthy, to bring it back to 1 – 09 to 0 – 04. Brian Dillons added a point which was followed by a point from David Garvey and Luke Fogarty. The first half was closed out with a point by Dillons and a point by James Allen to leave the board reading Blackrock 1 – 13, Brian Dillons 0 – 07 when the Ref blew for half time.
Following a powerful run from the half backline Andrew Murphy got us off to an early restart with a great point. Brian Dillons next point was answered by a point each from Luke Fogarty and David Garvey. Jack O'Farrell then swapped a goal with Dillons to bring the score to 2 – 16 to 1 – 09. Emmett Sheehan then got in on the scoring act with a point and following a great save by Dillons keeper Daniel Dunphy, James Allen was on hand to crash home our third goal to give us a comfortable lead of 14 points ( 3 – 17 to 1 – 09) with the clock showing 15 minutes remaining. A point each from Luke Fogarty and Dean Mc Carthy was followed by a point by Dillons and our boys quickly responded with further point's from Luke Fogarty, Dan Tyner and Jack O'Farrell. A point each from Luke Fogarty and Emmett Sheehan was answered by 2 points from Dillons and the closing score of a point fell to Luke Fogarty with a free. The scoreboard made good reading at Blackrock 3 – 25, Brian Dillons 1 – 12.
