.

Report by Roger Ryan

In a very competitive and high-scoring game at Ballinlough on Tuesday evening our Junior A team were narrowly beaten by Whites Cross on a score of Rockies 1 – 20, Whites Cross 4 – 14.

Whites Cross opened the scoring with a sideline cut and this was followed by a point from Peter Leneghan. Two further points from Whites Cross had them ahead but Luke Fogarty and Brian Lynch soo had us back on level terms again. A Whites Cross point was answered by a point from Dave Garvan and Luke Fogarty to put us ahead bya point 0 – 05 to 0 – 04. Two points by Whites Cross and a point by Jack O'Sullivan had us back on level terms again at 0 – 06 each when Whites Cross struck for 3 goals on the trot to forge ahead by 9 points 0 – 06 to 3 – 06. With half time approaching Luke Fogarty scored 2 points to reduce their lead to a more manageable 7 points.

Our boys started the second half in determined fashion and 2 further points had us back within 5 points of Whites Cross. A further exchange of scores had us within 4 points but Whites Cross added a point and a further goal to go ahead again by 7 points 0 – 17 to 4 – 12. A chink of light appeared when Luke Fogarty blasted to the net for our goal. Brian Lynch scored from a long-range free and also converted a 65 but try as we did we failed to get to get the last goal which which would have drawn us level.

Full marks to the entire squad for a great effort. They really played their hearts out and were unlucky not to get a draw at least.
